What is an orthotic?
An orthotic is a custom-made insole designed to support and control the motion of the foot. Through this control, the orthotic device can also affect the knees, hips, pelvis and back. Orthotics are made from a variety of materials, based on your individual needs – a firmer device provides control and support, while a softer one offers shock absorption and comfort.
Who would benefit from an orthotic device?
Orthotics can be useful for all kinds of people – from athletes with knee pain to production line workers with arch pain. Pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or back may be the result of a hidden or obvious problem of foot structure and function. Orthotics may decrease painful symptoms in one or more of these areas by supporting the movement of the lower extremity through control of the foot.
What orthotic services are offered by PhysioCare?
First, your need for an orthotic device will be evaluated. The therapists have advanced training and years of experience evaluating the need for – and potentially beneficial effects of – orthotic devices. After the evaluation, your physical therapist will discuss your choice of footwear and desired activities, then prepare to order the orthotic for you. This involves taking measurements, analyzing how your body moves and making a cast impression of your foot, and it’s all done in the name of ensuring the best possible fit, control and comfort of the device. When the cast is complete it is sent to a laboratory, where the orthotic shell is heat-molded to the impression of your foot.
What if an orthotic device isn’t necessary?
Our physical therapists can provide counseling regarding your footwear, as well as suggestions regarding the use of an over-the-counter insole.
What happens after I receive the orthotic device?
Your physical therapist will fit it to you and your shoes. And that may just be the beginning. Orthotics are just one part of a complete rehabilitation program. Manual therapy, exercise and movement re-education could also be a part of your successful return to activity.
